This, along with the other design and technological innovations and developments of the M Series, has enabled Genelec to produce an active monitor series that points to an influential new way forward.

Not only is it an extremely capable studio monitor but it also could do double duty as a hi-fi speaker for those of us who want high levels of accuracy and detail when listening for pleasure. Interfacing wasn't an issue, as the M happily connected to my laptop's headphone output, an unbalanced RCA phono feed from an external D-A, and balanced XLR's from a mixing console, all without any issues whatsoever.

Although a bit more of a carry than the smaller M, the M could also act as a very capable location recording monitor. Then there is the M's place in the extremely competitive active monitor market. Digital amplification, active crossovers, integrated DSP and off-shore manufacturing have brought price points tumbling downwards in recent years.

It is personally extremely gratifying to see Genelec using innovation, technology and an environmentally friendly ethos rather than 'off-shoring' production in order to give engineers and musicians the opportunity to experience Genelec performance at a more wallet-friendly price. I was extremely impressed by the Genelec M, not only by its accuracy and by the level of detail that it enabled me to get into in the music, but also by its tight, fast dynamics and solid, uncompressed bass. If you are looking for a pair of small, high-quality monitors for your home or project studio at around this price, you really do need to give the Genelec M an audition.

I'm going to be rather reluctant to send them back. All are well worth auditioning and all offer strong competition to the M A high-performance active monitor with an ethos of environmental sustainability.

The biocomposite cabinet, plus new amplification and driver designs, have enabled Genelec to deliver a high level of audio performance with true recyclability and a minimised carbon footprint. Highly recommended. Pros Accurate, precise and musical. Tight, fast dynamics. Solid, uncompressed bass. Excellent stereo imaging. Environmentally friendly!

AutoCal also aligns relative levels, time-of-flight, as well as adjusts correct crossover phase called AutoPhase for all subwoofers on the network. The Acoustic Response Editor provides accurate graphical display of the measured response, filter compensation and the resulting system response for each monitor, with full manual control of acoustic settings.

The active crossover design offers multiple benefits: The frequency response becomes independent of any dynamic changes in the driver's electrical characteristics or the drive level. There is an increased flexibility and precision to adjust and fine tune each output frequency response for the specific drivers used. Each driver has its own signal processing and power amplifier. This isolates each driver from the drive signals handled by the other drivers, reducing inter-modulation distortion and overdriving problems.

The ability to compensate for sensitivity variations between drivers. The flat frequency response of a high-quality active loudspeaker is a result of the combined effect of the crossover filter response, power amplifier responses and driver responses in a loudspeaker enclosure.

Note that the mains power switch will always turn the monitor off completely. Each transducer is driven by its own optimized amplifier. This may improve the transient response of the system.

There is a reduction in the power amplifier output requirement. This can reduce costs and increase audio quality and system reliability.
