The issue I have is when I press the play button either way the reels go the opposite way of what I am expecting and then it plays backwards.

Have you actually put a tape on this deck and listened to it? Without a tape the reel tables will spin in opposite directions. Is this your first R2R tape deck? Let's see if we can figure out what is happening.
Now on playback only the right channel works. It seems to record OK and both left and right channels seem to work during Record but when I playback only the right channel works.
